Liverpool can breathe easy: A new long-term deal for Benitez
March 19, 2009 by JamieSmith · Comments
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has signed a new long-term contract in the wake of his side’s demolitions of both Real Madrid and Manchester United, two of football’s super-powers, in the last week
The news that Benitez has tied himself to the club until 2014 comes as a huge surprise, as he has seemed ill at ease with the club’s American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett for much of their tenure at Anfield
The Spaniard’s decision to stay is made after the club’s chief executive Rick Parry chose to leave the club at the end of this season . Benitez told the BBC: “My heart is with Liverpool, so I’m delighted to sign this new deal.”
Benitez and Parry had a fractious relationship with Parry thought to be behind the transfer of Robbie Keane to the club, a player Benitez didn’t want. The manager promptly sold the Irishman back to Spurs at the first opportunity.
That move seems to have convinced Benitez that in future he will have more control over incoming transfers, something he has fought for over his time at the club.
Rumours have persisted that Benitez would be tempted by the chance to take over at Real Madrid, a club who have long admired his managerial talents. But this news seems to quash those rumours.
“I love the club, the fans and the city and with a club and supporters like this, I could never say no to staying.”
Liverpool haven’t won the league title for almost twenty years, and if Manchester United win the Premier League this year they will equal the Merseyside club’s record of eighteen Championships.
Benitez has never led the club close to winning the league, but has brought great success in European competition. Liverpool won their fifth European Cup with Benitez at the helm in 2005, with one of football’s great comebacks against AC Milan in Istanbul, and two years later again reached the final, where the Italian club had their revenge with a 2-1 win. But the only other silverware Benitez has won is the FA Cup, in 2006, when Liverpool were lucky to beat West Ham.
The club’s fans will hope that the new contract shows that Benitez is dedicated to Liverpool and that the next five years with Benitez at the helm will be more successful domestically than the five previous.
