Winter Nails

Lunar Nails: Big this Season.
Making it big on and off the catwalk are ‘Lunar’ or ‘half moon’ nails. Many models and celebrities have been sporting both looks, each as exciting and most likely time consuming as each other.
‘Lunar’ nails scream Hollywood glamour, the nail is painted dark and the lightness of the cuticle is extenuated to give a half moon effect.
Designer nails are far more extravagant than the nail art we’re used to seeing and far more detailed. This trend is already extremely popular with celebrities, such as Rihanna and Katy Perry. But it’s not only the quirky who can pull off this look. During the American election singer eve was spotted with Obama’s face painted on to her nails…Now that’s dedication for you!
Another big trend this season is the matte nail, so lose the shine and shimmer and opt for flat colour. Since the ‘Twilight’ frenzy nails can never be dark enough, whether they are black, blue or purple as long as they are vampish they are hot!
But if your not brave enough to try the new nail art then the French manicure is always a hit with us at Detour!

With bold colours dominating the winter months its back to basics for Spring Summer as Peache’s, Beige’s and pale Grey’s make a comeback. As seen at London Fashion Week designers such as John Rocha opted for a more subdued collection which although looked flesh coloured, showed very little flesh at all. This spring is all about layering…with loose cardigans, sheer blouses and tailored trousers this trend is chic and fresh. Here’s a few of the best pieces out there:
- Warehouse recycled silk harem pants £60.00 www.warehouse.co.uk

- Yumi Boutique rose button funnel-neck coat £69.00 www.asos.co.uk

Starbucks Makes It’s Runway Debut…

As the talk of London and New York Fashion Week quietly comes to an end, Milan’s designers were in full swing. This year’s catwalk designs were showing a little less glam and a little more practicality. The theme seemed to be wearable pieces but still designed for the elite with the price tag still very much attached.
Two twin brothers have taken these practicality pieces to the next level and donned their models with big sunglasses, back-combed hair clutching Starbucks coffee, fashion magazines and occasionally smoking.
Dan and Dean Caten, known as Dsquared, have enhanced the ‘ordinary girl’ look and marched it down the catwalk. Their new collection includes feather skirts, denim jackets and slouchy beanies. So is casual the new dressed up? This season I think so.
As well as clutching their Starbucks coffees and magazines, the models checked their Blackberrys and listened to their ipods whilst strutting down the runway. It is thought that Dan and Dean got a lot of their inspiration from the Hollywood stars who work it in the streets of LA with their take-out coffees and boho accessories, much like the Olsen twins!
Dan and Dean’s designs are best described as ‘glam-rock’ and have been worn by celebrities including Justin Timberlake and Madonna and have appeared on America’s Next Top Model and Fergie’s video for hit single ‘Clumsy’. It is also quite fitting that Dsquared have launched their new line in Milan as their flagship store was opened in the city in 2007.
Natural beauty and effortless fashion seem to be what’s in this season so keep your eyes peeled for big-haired females strutting their stuff on the high street wearing big sunglasses and clutching their Starbucks and Blackberrys.

Please Welcome Back… Phoebe Philo

Revamping a bundle of sweetness into the famous Chloé designs between 2001 and 2006; the invention of the pad lock hooked high street to catwalk as they mimicked this phenomenon bringing Chloe’s light to people’s hands.
“Phoebe Philo is credited with bringing a street edge to the Chloé` label.” Said Jo Craven, the fashion features editor of Vogue. In 2001 she became Head designer at Chloé, following the departure of her friend Stella McCartney who she had known for many years. McCartney and Philo go back further than Chloé as they had both studied together at the famous university of fashion, Central Saint Martin’s. McCartney left Chloé to go on and launch her own label, ‘Egonymnous’.
Philo then became head designer of Chloé at just 27, where she took on the role at full speed. She made Chloé huge profits by introducing, what we at InJournalism call, the ‘Cute’ era for Chloé. It was her designs of the pastel coloured tunic dresses, the pretty blouses and flared jeans, which made the brand her own.
In the beginning, she may have been seen as McCartney’s replacement but, she proved them wrong. Through her individuality her time at Chloé turned into a stepping-stone for her career as she had now proved that she was able to do it alone. Today she is recognised as a fashion icon, having high status and respect within the fashion idiom due to her success and innovation within the Chloé label.
Philo left Chloé after 5 years so that she could become a full time mother and said: “My decision to resign is for personal reasons, especially to spend more time with my new baby in the coming months.”
Three years on, Philo is said to be making a comeback. No longer designing for Chloé but concentrating on a line of her own it seems everything Philo touches turns to gold as her former assistant is now appointed as the creative director at Chloe.
There has been speculation that Philo will pair up with Celine, owned by fashion icon, Moet Hennessy, who in the past has worked along side Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs. Considering her pioneering work for Chloé, she would be quite at home within the Celine brand.
Philo’s come back will be nothing less than magnificent as she puts her finishing touches to a line designed for an older demographic than before. With a little bit of research she realised there to be: “a huge gap in the market for thirty something women.” She promises her line will be practical, but just when the return of the highly acclaimed Philo is actually going to happen will keep us on the edge of our seats.
So ladies keep your eyes and ears open as Phoebe Philo is sure to shake the fashion world once again!
