Art Students Raise Money For Haitians

January 29, 2010 by Nicholas Robinson

cimg1625 The earthquake which flattened Haiti over two weeks ago may have destroyed homes, buildings and lives, but the disaster has awoken something closer to home and unique in humanity.

The disaster has stirred our sense of duty to our fellow man, the natural reflex to help another human in need. We may not see it often, but it’s always there, waiting.

Students and staff at Sunderland University’s Ashburne campus, are organising a fundraiser in aid of the Haitian people.

Contributions of paintings, photos, drawings and other masterpieces, all created by staff and students from the campus, will be auctioned Tuesdayevening at the Bonded Warehouse, Low Street, Sunderland.

If auctions aren’t your thing, then the event organisers have arranged a whole evening of entertainment, including: burlesque routines, African drummers, a human statue, poetry readings and a performance art show.

The money raised will go to the, Help for Haiti appeal; event organisers are aiming to raise a minimum of £300 by auctioning off nearly 30 lots of individual and exclusive works created by the talented Artists of Ashburne.

Bidding, on most works, will start at £2, doors open at 5.00pm February 2. The first auction will start at 6.00pm with the promise of nibbles throughout the evening, plus the bar will also be open.
