This comes as good news for students right across the media department within the university, as their large amounts of time spent on the social networking site could actually be doing them the world of good.
The Journalism and PR students of the university received a talk recently from the Sunderland Echo’s digital editor Lee Hall. Lee talked to the students about how newspapers are becoming big online and that social networking is key. On the internet newspapers are certainly making their presence known and are receiving many more viewings than the newspapers themselves. This shows how big the internet has become, however Lee says how students shouldn’t become hung up on the technology side of it all.
Lee himself says how he isn’t the best at using computers and such like, however he’s manged to become the digital editor of the Sunderland Echo and this shows how anything is possible. Many people believe videos have to be well crafted but Lee says how rough and ready videos are just as good. In today’s technology items such as mobile phones have allowed people to video things just as they happen where ever they may be and this can create some of the best stories.
Lee also discussed the issue of newspapers and how they try to bring people together, however Lee said how he believes there are much better forums to do this.
Social networking is better, community building and connecting people, and Facebook is great for that.
He’s right as facebook is a great way of making some valuable contacts and keeping in touch with them, nearly all students across the media department have a facebook account so it’s something that can be adapted to help them in their future careers in media.
Lee also said how the Sunderland Echo website is always looking for new material and students can help with this, capturing anything they may find interesting, on something so simple as their mobile phone. He also said how there wasnt a better time to enter the world of PR as the website was desperate for multimedia content, this was good news for the PR hopefuls among the students.
All in all the talk gave some good advice and some top tips for entering the world of media, especially the digital side of things. If you want a succesful career in media then facebook is certainly the way forward.
